Trains halted after person dies on tracks at Leyland station

Train services on the main west coast train route were suspended during the morning rush hour on Monday, after a person was found dead on the tracks in Lancashire.

British Transport Police (BTP) said officers were called to Leyland railway station just before 07:00 BST, following reports of a casualty on the tracks. Paramedics also attended, with the person pronounced dead at the scene.

Avanti West Coast said all lines had been closed between Preston and Wigan North Western due to “emergency services managing an incident”.

Avanti later said all lines had re-opened but “residual delays and some alterations are expected”. Transpennine Express also said disruption was expected until 10:30 BST.

A BTP spokesman said: “Officers were called to Leyland railway station at 6.53am today (12 October) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

“Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The incident is not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
