Timelapse shows winter solstice sunrise

Thousands of people have gathered at Stonehenge to watch the sunrise on the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.

The Sun rose just after 08:00 GMT at the historic site in Wiltshire, England, with some of the 8,500 visitors taking part in symbolic rituals to mark the occasion.

One family told the BBC they woke up at 02:00 to drive down from Nottingham for the event.

“It’s just nice to get involved,” said daughter Bella Ridley-Thompson. “This is a ceremony after all, so it’s nice to dress up and have a bit of respect.”

From today, the days will start to get longer and we will get more daylight.
