Three-year-old boy rescued from tracks just before train passes

CCTV footage has been released showing the moment a three-year-old boy was rescued from tracks seconds before a train passed at high speed.

The child was with two adults and another child when he fell from the southbound platform at Newark Northgate railway station, in Nottinghamshire, last month, London North Eastern Railway (LNER) said.

In the video, released by LNER on Monday, he can be seen walking behind one of the adults and then climbing down before falling on to the tracks.

LNER said another adult ran back and rescued the boy, before a train is seen coming through seconds later.

Station customer services assistant, Olivia Timms, who saw the incident, said it was “really upsetting” for the child and family, and for those who witnessed it.

“I think the fact a train came through the station at speed just seconds after emphasised just how awful the outcome could have been,” she said.

“Thankfully, everyone made it home safely that day and we want to make sure that happens every day.”

LNER said it had released the footage to highlight the importance of safety at stations and to encourage customers to request help when needed.

Warrick Dent, safety and operations director at LNER, added: “Thankfully incidents like the one captured on the CCTV are rare, but they do happen.

“We know that travelling with children can be challenging. Navigating buggies and luggage through a busy station can be stressful.

“So, we want to make sure parents and carers are aware of the services we have available which can make their journey with us smoother and safer.”
