Three men have pleaded guilty to riot following the 2023 unrest in Ely after the deaths of two teenagers.

Tyler Stapleton, 25, of Ely, McKenzie Pring, 21, of Caerau, and James Chappell, 30, of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, changed their pleas from not guilty.

The disorder was sparked by the deaths of Kyrees Sullivan, 16, and Harvey Evans, 15. They died in an e-bike crash in Ely, Cardiff, on 22 May 2023.

At Cardiff Crown Court on Friday Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke told the men they will be sentenced on 8 June next year.

Trouble flared in east Cardiff when rumours spread on social media that the boys killed in the crash were being followed by police at the time.

CCTV analysed by BBC Verify showed the boys were being followed minutes before the crash.

People gathered after and violence spread. Officers were injured and vehicles and property damaged.

More than 40 people have been charged in connection with the disorder, which happened overnight.

Between 03:00 BST and 03:30 on 23 May the crowds were dispersed.
