The Traitors: Elen didn’t suspect Charlotte’s fake Welsh accent

When Elen and Charlotte met on The Traitors they both discovered they were from Wales.

But Charlotte was lying to appear more trustworthy as a faithful – much to Elen’s confusion once she watched the show.

Elen, 24, from north Wales but now living in Cardiff, said previous traitors had been Welsh so she did not see it as a particularly trustworthy accent in that context.

She said she wanted to showcase the Welsh language while on the show and taught it to contestants in the castle.

Charlotte, who was born and bred in London, told contestants she was from Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, and moved to London as an adult.

In episode one she said: “I’ve been putting on a Welsh accent because my mum’s from Wales, it’s one of the most trustworthy accents.”

Elen said she thought it was “ironic” because “both of us were targeted at the same time, so clearly it’s not as trustworthy”.

The 24-year-old opera-singer said going on the show was “nothing like I anticipated”.

People were “clutching at straws” and “tend to follow the herd” in the early stages of the game, Elen added.

She discovered “many people in the castle didn’t know” the Welsh language existed and loved teaching people it.

Elen said Kasim showed the most interest, “he could also tell I wasn’t as confident in there so he showed particular interest in the language as a way of trying to include me more because I was kind of isolating myself”.

Speaking on BBC Wales Breakfast, Elen said she had been watching the series but skipped the episode when she was banished.

“It wasn’t something I wanted to relive.”

Elen added that she noticed “confident” and “likeable” women in the group on the first day and thought they would make “great traitors” leading her to her theory of who they were.
