After World War Two ended, a scheme was cooked up to introduce circular motorways to London in a bid to modernise the city and reduce congestion.
But urban planner Sir Patrick Abercrombie’s vision sparked a backlash, and very little of what he proposed ended up being built.
During an interview with author and maps expert Vincent Westbrook, BBC London’s Robert Elms recounted how his gran’s house had to be demolished for one of the few sections of road that was built, in Shepherd’s Bush.
“She never forgave the city,” Elms said.
