Uganda back in Invictus Games after withdrawing over ‘Harry-Meghan nonsense’ | UK News

Uganda will now be taking part in Prince Harry’s Invictus Games next year, after the country pulled out over the “nonsense” related to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Sky News understands.

According to Chris Magezi, the spokesperson of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), Uganda has been reinstated after a phone call between General Muhoozi Kainerugaba and the King’s principal private secretary, Sir Clive Alderton.

Announcing on Monday on X the reinstatement of Uganda in next year’s games in Birmingham, Mr Magezi said: “Sir Alderton said King Charles III has no problem with Uganda’s participation in the Invictus Games, and encouraged the CDF to proceed with preparations for UPDF’s participation in the games.”

Buckingham Palace has not confirmed the reported call between the general and the private secretary took place.

Last week, Uganda’s defence chief announced the country would be pulling out of next year’s event.

The Invictus Games, founded by Prince Harry, are a Paralympics-style sporting event for injured and sick military personnel and veterans.

General Kainerugaba said in a post on X the decision to pull out of the event was “in order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere”, adding: “We shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty’s approval.”

Explaining the reasoning behind it, General Kainerugaba then told The Times: “I have factions in the Ministry of Defence that support that Harry-Meghan nonsense. I had to quash it straight away. I support the monarch. Period.”

The announcement came after the King sent out a letter clarifying the official status of his son, Prince Harry, and his wife, Meghan Markle.

The King said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were to remain private citizens and would not be working royals following their return to the UK last month.

Charles instructed the Lord Chamberlain to contact government departments and the military following requests for guidance after the return of the couple.

Harry and Meghan had been living in the US, where they moved after quitting their positions as senior royals in January 2020.
