Taking on cycle challenge 10 years after spinal injury

A Kelso man has told of his journey from breaking his back to taking on a challenge to cycle the length of Scotland.

Connor Hughes was injured at the age of 19 playing rugby for Stirling University in 2014, leaving him paralysed from the armpits down.

Now, 10 years on, he is aiming to cycle across Scotland on a specially adapted bike and is working towards completing his degree.

Along the way, Connor has undergone pioneering stem cell treatment and spinal cord stimulation therapy, in the US and Thailand.

He has also strived to improve his condition and relies less and less on personal care, with plans in place to move into his own house.

Connor told BBC Scotland: “I think the treatments are part of it, but you’ve still got to work for it and push yourself.”
