A 12-month-old long-finned pilot whale has died after becoming stranded on a beach.

Beachgoers at Llangennith, Swansea, including Adi Armoni, tried to rescue the marine animal but were unable to save it.

Mr Armoni said: “We tried whatever we could, but it died in my hands after 15 minutes.”

Marine Life Rescue was contacted but arrived after the whale had died.

The whale was first spotted at 14:30 BST on Monday, when Mr Armoni arrived to find a group of people already trying to move the animal.

“The tide was going out, and the longer we stayed there, the water went too far and we couldn’t bring lift it,” he said

“We realised we couldn’t move it, so I suggested digging a hole below the head to help it breathe.

“The animal was too heavy, and conditions got worse.”

Mr Armoni entered the water to try and support the whale, but despite their efforts, the animal died within minutes.

Around 30 minutes after the whale was first spotted, Marine Life Rescue arrived, but the whale had died.
