The 27-year-old, who is 6ft 5ins tall, will link up with Newcastle after finishing the Currie Cup season back home with Pumas.

Director of rugby Steve Diamond told the club’s website, external: “Stefan is a very dynamic ball carrier who is good under the high ball.

“He’s gone well for the Pumas in the Currie Cup, he’s keen to learn and he’ll give us some depth at full-back as we move into the Gallagher Prem season.”

Coetzee is the 13th player signed by Newcastle since Red Bull became involved with the club.

They begin their league campaign a week on Friday, 26 September, with a home match against Saracens.
