In a statement, Mossos d’Esquadra – the police force for the Catalonia region – said they were called to reports of a fight close to the nightclub at around 4am on Friday morning.
Police found the 31-year-old with critical injuries and he died at the scene.
Spanish authorities are reviewing CCTV images from the area to identify others suspected of involvement.
Marc Buch, the town’s mayor, said he “deeply regrets the death of one person tonight in a nightclub fight”.
In a statement, external on X, formerly Twitter, he added: “My condolences and support to the family. I hope the assailant isn’t out on the streets again in a few hours.”
A UK Foreign Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Spain and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Calella is located on the Costa del Maresme, which is close to the Costa Brava. Both are popular with holidaymakers from the UK and elsewhere.
