Epsom Oaks: Irish champion jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle rides Joseph O’Brien-trained Thundering On from last place to first

Irish champion jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle rode Thundering On from last place to first to secure victory in the Oaks at Epsom.

The 5-1 shot trained by Joseph O’Brien was the back marker in the opening stages of the race but challengers began to fall away up the home straight.

At the furlong marker, Thundering On and McMonagle cruised alongside John and Thady Gosden’s eventual runner-up Legacy Link.

The Frankel filly responded when McMonagle pushed the button and accelerated away to clinch victory by three-and-three-quarter lengths.

McMonagle said once Thundering On got going “there was never a moment’s doubt” she would win the race.

“It was effortless from start to finish, she did everything we wanted.

“She sprinted away from them. She’s very, very talented. She was as impressive as any horse you’ll see. She’s so talented and I’m very lucky.

“She’s improving every run and the sky’s the limit for her, she can go wherever she wants.”

Earlier, Oisin Murphy guided Seagulls Eleven to victory in the Diomed Stakes after a thrilling finish.

The four-year-old, owned by a group of footballers including recently retired James Milner and his former Brighton team-mates Danny Welbeck and Lewis Dunk, held off a late challenge from last year’s winner Persica to win by a nose.

Trainer Hugo Palmer said: “I thought we were done, I must admit. Luckily he put his head down where it mattered.

“I did think Persica was going better but we’ve probably outstayed him.”
