SNP MSP Ruth Maguire to stand down in 2026 after cancer diagnosis

But she confirmed she would have to step back from some public duties ahead of the Holyrod vote while she undergoes treatment.

The former councillor, who was first elected in 2016, said: “Hearing from doctors that I have cancer again was obviously pretty devastating and, to be honest, facing treatment again is really daunting.

“I am, however, blessed to be surrounded by hugely supportive friends and family who will carry me through.”

Maguire said that by 2026 she will have spent nearly nearly 15 years as an elected SNP politician, having previously represented Irvine West on North Ayrshire Council.

She added: “I know in my heart and head that the end of this parliamentary term is the right time for me to finish my period in frontline politics.

“The last few years have been challenging both politically and personally for me and even with strength and support, it takes its toll.

“I am taking this decision for me but also for my family whose unwavering love and support, often at the expense of their interests, have carried me through difficult times.”

Her announcement comes after the deadline for SNP members to submit applications for vetting ahead of the 2026 poll closed on Monday.

Glasgow Cathcart MSP James Dornan and Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale MSP Christine Grahame have already announced they will not stand again.

Meanwhile, former first ministers Nicola Sturgeon and Humza Yousaf have submitted their application for vetting, but have yet to announce formally if they plan to stand.
