Emergency services were called to a large fire in Cumbernauld

Six people have been taken to hospital after a huge fire broke out at an industrial estate in North Lanarkshire.

BBC News understands two people are being treated for serious burns and four others for smoke inhalation.

Six fire engines were sent to Blairlinn Industrial Estate in Cumbernauld at 14:35 where a single storey building was found to be “well alight”.

Some surrounding buildings have been evacuated as a precaution.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said five patients were taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary and one patient was taken to University Hospital Monklands.

It sent six ambulances, three special operations response teams, a paramedic response unit, a trauma team and a resuscitation rapid response unit to the scene.

Police said people in the Greenfaulds area of Cumbernauld should stay indoors and keep their windows closed.

Grey smoke billows in the air from the remains of a burnt out building interior. Fire fighters up on raised platforms send jets of water down into the building.

Scottish Water said the incident had led to low pressure and discoloured water for some people in the area.

It warned that some people might experience an interruption to their water supply.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Operations Control initially mobilised two appliances to the scene and on arrival firefighters found one single-storey building well alight.

“A further four appliances were mobilised to the scene.

“Six casualties have been passed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service and firefighting crews remain in attendance.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of the fire at a premises in Mid Road, Cumbernauld at about 15:00 today.

“We are on site assisting with traffic management. Some surrounding buildings are being evacuated as a precaution.”

Black smoke billows in the air over a motorway. It is a bright day and the sky is blue. Cars can be seen ahead on the motorway.
