Seven people have been charged after an alleged “hate crime” during a match between St Mirren and Aberdeen in May, police have said.

Aberdeen had previously apologised to a St Mirren supporter who was targeted at the Scottish Premiership game in Paisley with a chant, which then appeared on social media.

Police Scotland said two male youths aged 16, and men aged 19, two aged 22 and two aged 23 had been charged with threatening and abusive behaviour.

A report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.

A video had shown abuse aimed at a St Mirren fan with additional support needs.

Both clubs condemned the incident, which Aberdeen described as “totally unacceptable”.

PC Louise Sung said: “Thank you to both clubs for their co-operation and assistance in our investigation.”
