A number of homes have been evacuated due to a security alert in west Belfast following the discovery of a “suspicious object”, a Sinn Féin councillor has said.

Police said they are at the scene of the alert in the Glenalina Gardens area of the city.

Cordons are in place and people have been asked to avoid the area.

Sinn Féin councillor for Black Mountain, Róis-Máire Donnelly, said the alert is causing “serious disruption”.

“With children off school for the Halloween break, this has been particularly disruptive for families who’ve had to leave their homes at short notice,” she added.

She also thanked staff at the Whiterock Community Centre for opening their doors for those who have had to leave their homes and urged people to stay away from the area.
