There are dangerous currents at dams at reservoirs in the Pentland Hills

Searches are taking place after a swimmer was reported missing at a reservoir on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

The incident happened just before 17:00 on Monday at Harlaw Reservoir in the Pentland Hills at Balerno.

Police Scotland said the emergency services carried out searches of the water but were unable to trace the missing man.

“Inquiries are ongoing and water searches will continue on Tuesday,” said a spokeswoman.

An eyewitness said people had been searching the water with ropes tied around them when the police and rescue teams arrived.

“It’s a horrible situation to witness and a reminder of how dangerous the water can be,” they said.

There are warning signs about the currents which can be experienced at dams in the park’s reservoirs.
