Scottish hospital admissions due to flu rise by 12% in a week

The combined number of hospital admissions for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus and Covid-19 have risen by 6% to 1,878 in the week up to 29 December.

Dr Nick Phin, director of clinical protecting health at PHS, said: “Although we always expect to see increases in flu in winter, we are seeing particularly high levels this year.

“This is worrying as flu can lead to severe illness, hospitalisation and even death, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, young children and those with underlying health conditions.”

He said vaccination offered the best protection against serious illness and urged eligible Scots to get a jag.
