After a year of soul searching and scrutiny, MSPs have rejected a bill which would allow a medically assisted death for terminally ill people with six months left to live.

Arguments on both sides have been passionate, emotional and often anguished. But how did a majority of MSPs go from supporting the bill last year, to voting it down 10 months later? And will assisted dying ever be made legal in Scotland?

We hear from the BBC’s Scotland Editor James Cook, who has covered the story from the very beginning.

Scotcast is the BBC’s Scottish news podcast. This episode is hosted by Laura Miller and Natalie Higgins.
