Schools and roads closed after Beds, Herts and Bucks flooding

A post on Sharnbrook Academy’s Facebook page, external told parents “three out of four routes into the village are currently closed” while there were “extensive road closures in operation on local routes”.

“A significant number of staff and students are unable to safely get to school,” the post continued.

Emergency crews have been on Paula Radcliffe Way (A6) north of Bedford to deal with flooding that has closed the road in both directions.

Lincroft Academy in Oakley similarly announced it had shut for the day due to travel routes into the area being flooded.

Oakley Road at Bromham has been closed due to emergency works by UK Power Networks.

Parts of Hitchin in Hertfordshire have also been flooded, according to social media users, including Woolgrove Road.

There was a crash on the A505 Baldock Bypass, with a vehicle overturning in the wet conditions according to police, external.

In Buckinghamshire, the A422 at Chicheley, near Milton Keynes, has also been submerged in parts and blocked.

Scientists say extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense as a result of climate change.
