A school in south Belfast closed on Wednesday after graffiti was painted on nearby walls.

Donegall Road Primary School confirmed the closure “due to circumstances beyond our control” on social media.

In a statement, released through the Education Authority (EA), a spokesperson for the school said it was unable to open “due to criminal damage to the school site”.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed it received a report of criminal damage in the Maldon Street, Nubia Street and Empire Street areas of south Belfast on Wednesday.

The spokesperson for the school said: “Whilst it would be inappropriate to comment further due to an ongoing PSNI investigation, we are working with all relevant parties to minimise disruption and reopen as quickly as possible.”

They added that a further update would be provided to parents.
