Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim wants Rory McIlroy to bring a winning feeling to Old Trafford following his Masters golf triumph.

United supporter McIlroy said after he won a career grand slam at Augusta National that he would take his Green Jacket to the stadium “if it can inspire some better play”.

The Red Devils are 14th in the Premier League after a disappointing season in which Amorim has struggled to revive their fortunes.

In a message on Manchester United’s official X account, Amorim said he would welcome the 35-year-old Northern Irishman’s presence at a fixture in the near future.

“Hi Rory. Congratulations for the Masters and I want to invite you to Old Trafford to show your trophy,” Amorim said.

“It’s really important for us in this moment. You achieved something that a lot of people thought would be impossible and we want that feeling in our stadium.

“So I hope to see you soon at Old Trafford and to meet you.”

Manchester United lost 4-1 at Newcastle hours before McIlroy began his final round on Sunday.

Amorim’s side now face Lyon in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final at Old Trafford on Thursday (20:00 BST), though it is understood McIlroy will not be in attendance.

McIlroy previously paraded the Claret Jug at Old Trafford after winning the Open Championship in 2014.

Darts world champion Luke Littler, another Manchester United fan, showed off his trophy to the club’s supporters at half-time during their 3-1 defeat by Brighton in January.
