More train passengers will face fines from Monday as Transport for Wales expands its penalty zone.
This means travellers on lines where they could previously buy tickets on board now risk forking out £20 or double their ticket fare – whichever is more.
TfW said this was to tackle fare dodging which it said cost them millions of pounds a year.
At Pengam railway station, in Caerphilly county, not all passengers thought the plan was a good one.
John Davies, 80, said ticket machines were “not very friendly” so he relied on getting tickets on board.
