Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners backed miners in 1984 at the height of their strike.
In return, the miners joined the Pride march in London in 1985 – an unlikely friendship forged out of adversity and solidarity.
Now, 40 years on, LGSM explain what really happened in that culture clash in the village of Onllwyn, Neath Port Talbot.
“These queers walked in and the whole tenor of the conversation dropped,” said Mike Jackson from LGSM.
“We knew that was about our presence, but we didn’t know which way it was going to go.
“And within seconds the whole hall stood up and gave us a standing ovation. That has to be the most amazing moment in my life forever.”
