Firefighters extinguished the blaze at the depot in Lynedoch Street, Greenock

A police investigation has begun into a large fire that broke out at a bus depot in Greenock to establish if it was started deliberately.

Two fire engines were despatched after reports of a blaze at the Lynedoch Street site just after 16:30 on Friday.

There were no reports of injuries and the flames were quickly brought under control with firefighters leaving the scene later that evening.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing”.

The depot is used to store coaches and minibuses, some of which are believed to be contracted for school transport services.

Images on social media showed a large fire lighting up the night sky with several buses silhouetted by the flames although it was not immediately clear if they were damaged.

Anyone with information is being urged to contact Police Scotland using the 101 number.
