Plex Rolls Out Updated Mobile App

Plex on Monday launched a new version of its mobile app, bringing improvements like expanded use of artwork, redesigned navigation and — “for personal media pros” — a tab for centralized media libraries.

The updated app will fully roll out over the next week, according to the company. Customers can expect to see new title artwork for movies and shows, a dedicated spot for Plex’s Watchlist feature in the top navigation, and a streamlined user menu. The revamped app arrives following testing, and a new app for TV platforms is set to follow soon.

Plex — which is among our top picks for no-cost TV streaming services — allows you to watch ad-supported, on-demand content and live channels with a free sign-up. You can also turn to Plex to set up a personal media server (more on that on this help page). According to an app store description, the new app “is intended to bring everything you love into one seamless interface-from your personal media collection to on-demand content.”

In a blog post, Plex provided a more detailed look at adjustments made since the app’s testing period, including improved load times, the option to shuffle TV shows and portrait mode support.

Existing Plex users who update their mobile apps should be aware that pre-existing downloads will lack some metadata, which can be fixed by re-downloading the title. Another change is that favoriting libraries has replaced pinning libraries to the sidebar. Plex is actively developing music and photo apps that will accompany the Plex app, and you won’t be able to access photos and music in the main app after you update.

Last month, Plex announced changes for people who stream personal content remotely from a Plex server. They’ll now need a Plex Pass or a new Remote Watch Pass (or the server’s admin account will need a Plex Pass). The company is also set to increase the price of its monthly, annual and lifetime Plex Pass subscriptions later this month.
