A former chief constable has appeared in court charged with fraud and misconduct in public office after allegedly lying about his military career.
Nick Adderley, 59, formerly of Northamptonshire Police, is accused of falsely claiming he was a former lieutenant commander in the Royal Navy, had served in the 1982 Falklands War and was entitled to wear associated service medals.
Mr Adderley faces one count of misconduct in public office and one count of fraud, contrary to section 2 of the Fraud Act 2006.
He appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London and is due to next appear at Southwark Crown Court on 8 December.
He has been charged following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Mr Adderley is accused of committing the offences between 2018 and 2024, allegedly making the claims on his CV during his bid to become Northamptonshire’s chief constable in June 2018.
District judge Hina Rai said the misconduct charge was too serious to be dealt with in the magistrates’ court and sent the case to the higher court.
Mr Adderley was not asked to enter any plea and was granted unconditional bail ahead of the crown court hearing.
