Newtownards: Man arrested over County Down mosque attack

A man has been arrested in connection with an attack on a mosque in Newtownards in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A petrol bomb was thrown at the building on Greenwell Street, while graffiti was daubed on the wall, during the incident just before 01:00 BST.

On Sunday, police said the 42-year-old man was detained after two properties were searched in the town.

He remains in custody.

Officers said he was arrested on suspicion of attempted arson, possessing a petrol bomb and attempted intimidation.

The founder of the Islamic centre, Abdul Rob, told BBC News NI the attack had left his community nervous but that they would not leave the area.
