Michael Spellman: Midfielder follows Bobby Kamwa and Matt Baker through Newport exit door

Midfielder Michael Spellman has left Newport County after turning down a new contract, becoming the latest player to depart Rodney Parade this summer.

The 23-year-old joined the Exiles in July 2024 from Sunderland, following loan spells with non-league sides Whitby Town and Blyth Spartans.

He went on to score seven goals in two seasons at the club, with five coming in the past campaign as Newport narrowly avoid relegation to the National League on the final day of the season.

The departure of Spellman – named supporters’ player of the season – marks a third significant loss for Newport, following winger Bobby Kamwa and captain Matt Baker out of the club.

A statement from County confirmed: “Following discussions over a new contract, Michael Spellman has now chosen to move on, bringing his spell at Newport County to a close.

Everyone at the club would like to thank Michael for his commitment and contribution and wish him every success for the future.”
