Matthew Battenbough jailed for Leanne Williams’ Swansea murder

A “savage and merciless” murderer who bludgeoned a woman to death in her own home has been jailed.

Matthew Battenbough, 34, attacked 47-year-old Leanne Williams in Townhill, Swansea, in February after being released from prison on licence.

Swansea Crown Court heard Ms Williams was attacked with a frying pan, scissors and a knife in an attack described by the judge as showing “exceptional ferocity”.

Battenbough gave no explanation as to why he killed his victim, but pleaded guilty to murder and must now serve at least 20 years and 10 months before he can be considered for release from prison.

Police discovered Ms Williams’ body in her flat on Gomer Road on 27 February after she was reported missing.

Her clothing had been cut and torn and weapons used in the murder were found nearby, carrying her blood and Battenbough’s DNA.

Judge Paul Thomas KC said Ms Williams endured “unimaginable terror” in her final moments and condemned Battenbough for continuing his life “as though nothing had happened” in the days after.

He added: “You were invited to Leanne Williams’ flat… while you were there you subjected her to a prolonged, savage and merciless attack.”

Ms Williams’ family say they were troubled that Battenbough had been released from custody before the attack despite his violent history, which included burglary, battery and possession of an offensive weapon.

Her mother told the court: “Leanne was my only child and I am an only child. We only really had each other.

“Since her death I have become a recluse. She was beautiful, she was strong and kind.

“I trust we will be together some day.”
