Man dies and woman and child rescued from Poplar tower block fire

A man has died in a flat fire on the 17th floor of a residential tower block in east London, the London Fire Brigade (LFB) has said.

Its investigation team is looking at “a range of factors” regarding the cause of the blaze, which broke out at the 22-storey Neutron Tower on Blackwall Way in Poplar in the early hours of Saturday.

An LFB spokesperson added: “Two adults and one child were rescued by firefighters wearing breathing apparatus. Sadly, a man was declared dead at the scene.”

A further 50 people left the building before the brigade arrived.

On Sunday, residents from the block said they awee unable to go back to their flats as the electricity supply has been interrupted. They are currently being housed in a nearby hotel.

LFB said it was alerted to the fire at 04:35 BST and the fire was under control by 06:41.

Half of the two-bedroom flat and balcony was destroyed, it said.
