A man has died after being rescued from the sea near Penarth Pier, Vale of Glamorgan, on Monday.

The RNLI and emergency services launched a multi-agency rescue operation following sightings of the man in the water at about 16:30 GMT.

He was taken to hospital by the Welsh Ambulance Service but has since died, South Wales Police confirmed.

The force confirmed his next of kin had been informed and said there were no suspicious circumstances.

The RNLI thanked members of the public who raised the alarm and who went to assist the man in the water.

It said three open-water swimmers who were equipped with flotation buoys had supported the casualty.
