Officers have appealed for any witnesses to contact the force

A man has been arrested after three people were assaulted at a trans rights rally in Birmingham.

The man in his 30s was arrested on Monday night, after an incident in New Street on Saturday afternoon in which police said a number of people were pushed and spat at.

West Midlands Police said the suspect remained in custody while inquiries continued and that officers would be making contact with the victims as part of the investigation.

Campaigners said the rally – one of two in the city on Saturday – had been organised in response to the Supreme Court’s decision regarding the legal definition of a woman.

Judges at the UK Supreme Court ruled earlier this month a woman is defined by biological sex under equalities law.

The West Midlands force urged anyone who saw what happened on Saturday to contact officers via 101 or by Live Chat on its website.
