A man wielding a machete launched an attack inside a shop while “extremely frightened” children watched on, police said.

The attack at about 19:50 BST on Saturday in Kentmere Road in Breightmet, Bolton, left a man with injuries to his head and shoulder.

Greater Manchester Police said the suspect was recorded on CCTV swinging the machete close to members of the public, including children.

Armed officers arrested a man in his 30s on Sunday afternoon on suspicion of attempted murder. The victim remains in hospital for treatment to his injuries.

Det Insp Lee Shaw, from Wigan CID, said: “The incident has been captured on CCTV which shows the suspect swinging a large machete with blatant disregard of various members of the public close to him.

He said the children in the shop would have been “extremely frightened”.

Extensive damage was caused to the shop before the suspect fled the scene.

Appealing for information from the public, Det Insp Shaw added: “We believe this was a targeted attack and the two men knew each other, and we have acted swiftly to ensure a dangerous individual is in custody.”
