Liverpool 3-1 Burnley: Jurgen Klopp says blue cards would have sparked ‘Wild West’ scenes

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said it would have been the “wild west” had blue cards and sin-bins been in operation during their 3-1 win over Burnley.

Referee Tim Robinson booked five players and Klopp and his counterpart Vincent Kompany were also shown yellow cards during a tetchy game at Anfield.

Football’s lawmakers Ifab are to trial sin-binning players and issuing blue cards. Under the plans, players would get blue cards for dissent and tactical fouls and spend 10 minutes off the pitch.

“It was emotional,” said Klopp when asked about the number of bookings.

“Imagine in this game and the referee has a blue card available? It would have been the wild west. There were so many yellow cards.

“I had no clue why Vincent Kompany got it. I lost it in that situation so fine, give me a yellow card. As long as I don’t get a blue one and have to sit somewhere for 10 minutes!”

Klopp was booked for protesting after play was allowed to go on when Diogo Jota, who scored the opening goal, appeared to be wrestled to the ground inside Burnley’s penalty area.

Liverpool are two points clear at the top after briefly being replaced by Manchester City, who beat Everton 2-0 in the early kick-off.

“Ten days ago we played incredible against Chelsea then we lost to Arsenal,” added Klopp.

“It’s always a different challenge. If it’s not clicking straight away, fight through it. It was really tough today but the boys fought through and got three points.”
