Liam Payne: Fame in a flash and why it would not happen again | Ents & Arts News

Former One Direction star Liam Payne has died at the age of 31 after falling from the third-floor balcony of a hotel in Argentina.

The singer had been in the spotlight since 14 and joined the band at 16 when it was created on TV show The X Factor. With One Direction, Payne’s rise to fame was swift, and the five youngsters became one of the most successful pop groups worldwide.

But some former X Factor contestants have remarked about a lack of support while on the programme.

Dean Piper, who was a gossip columnist writing about The X Factor in its heyday, tells Niall Paterson that “upon reflection, I’m sure that there’s a lot of people that look back on those times that think ‘God, we didn’t really look after them at all'”.

Our arts and entertainment editor Claire Gregory also joins Niall to talk about Payne’s story and discuss the challenges of fame.
