French challenger Il Est Francais is on track for the King George VI Chase at Kempton on 26 December despite being pulled up on his latest run.
The six-year-old produced a scintillating display when winning the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase over the same course and distance 12 months ago.
Joint trainer Noel George confirmed he was being aimed at the King George despite his disappointing outing at Auteil last month.
“He burst a blood vessel last time. There was no particular reason for that and ever since the race he has been working well,” said George, who trains the horse with Amanda Zetterholm.
“I think if he can reproduce what he did last year then I think we’re going there with a winning chance.”
Il Est Francais is about a 6-1 chance for the big race behind 7-2 favourite Grey Dawning, the Betfair Chase runner-up trained by Dan Skelton.
