June Spencer recounts her lifetime on The Archers

June Spencer, who played matriarch Peggy Woolley in BBC Radio 4’s long-running drama The Archers from 1951 until 2022, has died at the age of 105.

She celebrated her 100th birthday while still a member of the cast, and retired aged103.

Talking about her radio career in an interview, she said “staying with The Archers a very shrewd guess on my part”.

A family statement said she died peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of Friday.
