St Helens legend James Roby is to leave his role as the club’s leadership, culture and performance coach.

The 39-year-old is Saints’ record appearance-maker, having played 551 games for the club.

He retired from playing at the end of the 2023 season and moved on to Paul Wellens’ coaching staff in January 2024.

Roby won six Super League titles, four Challenge Cups, eight League Leaders’ Shields and two World Club titles in his 19-year playing career with Saints.

St Helens said Roby will be “pursuing a new career path” but will remain a club ambassador and discussions will be held on other ways they can collaborate.

“I feel the time is right – I’ve been at the club for such a long time, and I actually made this decision quite a while back and informed them earlier in the season that I’d be moving on,” Roby told the club website., external

“It’s just time for me to take on a fresh challenge, test myself, and use the experience I’ve been so grateful to receive at St Helens over the years.”

The announcement of Roby’s exit comes less than a week after Saints confirmed Wellens was not being offered a new contract and they would be bringing in a new head coach.
