Jacob Bethell to miss The Hundred with a knee injury

England all-rounder Jacob Bethell has been ruled out of The Hundred with a knee injury sustained during the recent one-day international series against India.

Bethell had been named as Birmingham Phoenix captain for the season.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said that the 22-year-old had an MRI scan on Monday but they have not indicated when he will return.

England’s Test series against Pakistan starts on 19 August.

It is a blow for Bethell to miss out on the experience of captaincy, as he is regarded as a future England leader, having already led the side in a T20 series against Ireland last year.

He has also been in fine form, including a player of the match performance in Sunday’s series decider at Lord’s where he struck 91 at the top of the order and took 1-49.

He will be replaced by South Africa’s Donovan Ferreira as Phoenix skipper, who is a two-time Hundred champion with Oval Invincibles.

Phoenix’s opening match is against Trent Rockets at Edgbaston on Friday (18:30 BST).

Bethell, who plays county cricket for Warwickshire, was retained by Phoenix in the auction earlier this year with a contract worth £340,000.
