Jackie, a bald eagle in California who became an online star, died on Monday after receiving weeks of veterinary treatment.

Jackie was being cared for by Ojai Raptor Center, a wildlife rehabilitation organisation, after she was attacked by other eagles. The bird had underlying health issues that caused anaemia and weight loss.

“Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment and the combined efforts of our veterinary team and consulting specialists,” Ojai Raptor Center said in a statement.

A livestream featuring the Big Bear Valley nest of Jackie and her partner, Shadow, has hundreds of thousands of subscribers.

The Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam, run by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley in California, amassed a loyal following and Jackie was frequently spotted in the area since she hatched in the spring of 2012.

Jackie and Shadow had been mates since 2018, the Friends of Big Bear Valley website said.

“Our team is heartbroken. It has been an extraordinary privilege to care for her,” the Ojai Raptor Center said.

“We know this news will be deeply felt by the many thousands of people around the world who have followed her journey, hoped alongside us, prayed for her, and supported the people caring for her.

“We are working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and will provide a more comprehensive statement including additional information on her treatments and test results.”

Jackie’s remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Ojai Raptor Center said.
