Sturgeon said she was told earlier on Thursday she was no longer a suspect in Operation Branchform

Former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has spoken outside her home after being cleared as a suspect in a police investigation into SNP finances.

She said it was a relief to no longer have the “cloud of investigation hanging over me”.

The announcement came as her husband, ex-SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with embezzlement.

Speaking in Glasgow, Sturgeon said it has been a day of mixed emotions but it was the outcome she had expected.
