‘It’s a nightmare’: Police officer, passer-by and gunman killed in hotel shooting | World News

A police officer has been killed in a shooting at a hotel in Canada that also left a civilian and a suspected gunman dead.

A man opened fire on police officers, after emergency services were called to reports a suspect was brandishing a gun out the window of the Hilton hotel in Montreal on Monday at about 11.35am.

A gunfight then broke out between the shooter and police, with witnesses hearing between 30 and 40 shots.

The gunman was eventually killed as he adjusted or reloaded his weapon, police believe.

The officer who died has since been named by Montreal police as Constable Mohamed Lamine Benredouan, 34, who has been on the force since 2021.

His death marked the first time a Montreal police officer had been killed in the line of duty in 24 years, police said.

“It’s a very, very sad day. It’s a nightmare,” Montreal Police Chief Fady Dagher added.

An unidentified civilian also died in the exchange of fire, though it was not immediately clear who fired the shot.

Mr Dagher said a second officer was seriously injured in the shooting in the city’s Cote-des-Neiges neighbourhood but was in a stable condition.

Video appeared to show that the shooter – whose motives have not been established – was also outside the hotel.

Footage shared on social media also appeared to show the exchange of gunfire between police and a gunman carrying a long gun who was wearing an olive-coloured jacket and cargo trousers.

Quebec domestic security minister Ian Lafreniere declined to comment on the suspect’s identity and motives while the investigation is underway.

However, he confirmed investigators had concluded that the shooting was not a terrorist attack.

A police spokesperson in British Columbia said forces across the province were told of the possibility of “documentation or some type of manifesto” calling for police to be targeted with violence.

The alert triggered temporary closures along a major highway the Decarie Expressway as well as a temporary shutdown of significant sections of two subway network.

Jacob Coutu, who was working in construction near the shooting, said he heard “four of five gunshots” before police officers started arriving. He then heard more gunfire.

“We saw cops getting in a gunfight, getting shot down,” Coutu said.

He estimates he heard 30 or 40 gunshots.
