Ireland and Norway have officially recognised Palestine as a separate state, prompting Israel to recall its ambassadors from the European nations.
The Irish government argues that recognition supports a two-state solution, which it said is essential for lasting peace in the region, which has been at the centre of Israel’s offensive against Hamas since October.

Ireland and Norway are two of multiple European Union member countries – including Spain, Slovenia and Malta – that have indicated they plan on making the recognition in recent weeks.
Israel’s foreign ministry warned against the move on Tuesday, saying in a post on social media platform X that recognition would “lead to more terrorism, instability in the region and jeopardise any prospects for peace”.
“Don’t be a pawn in the hands of Hamas,” the ministry said.
