Almost 150 items were placed in the bin, including ice cream scoops, spoons and potato peelers

Police officers urged people to only use knife bins to dispose of bladed items, after ice cream scoops and spoons were found in a North Yorkshire bin.

North Yorkshire Police collected 146 items from a knife bin at Skipton Town Hall car park on Wednesday.

While it mostly contained knives of varying size, other kitchen utensils such as tin openers had also been discarded, a police spokesperson said.

The force said it looked like someone had used the bin for a “full kitchen drawer clear out”.

“Just a little reminder, the bins are for knives and bladed items only,” the spokesperson said.

“Everyday utensils like teaspoons and potato peelers can be disposed of in your bin at home.

“That said, it’s great to see people continuing to use the bins and helping keep our communities safe. Every knife handed in is one less that can cause harm.”
