Two hillwalkers were rescued from a mountain in the Cairngorms after getting stuck in wintry conditions.

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team said the pair became “cragfast” – or stuck on a steep rock face – in the Goat Track area of Coire an t-Sneachda on Tuesday evening.

The rescuers said the walkers set off at 18:00, intending to climb Ben Macdui.

“But without crampons or an ice axe they quickly found themselves unable to continue on steep ground in winter conditions,” they added.

The mountain rescue team said it was called out to help at about 20:45.

A spokesperson said: “After some rewarming and reassurance, the team were able to set up a belay and lower them safely back down to the corrie floor.

“Everyone was off the hill and back at base by 01:00. A good outcome all round.”
