Hampshire have appointed South African Russell Domingo as their new head coach on a two-year deal across all formats.

The 51-year-old takes over from Adi Birrell who departed the county at the end of last season.

Former Scotland head coach Shane Burger has been appointed bowling coach, while ex-club captain Jimmy Adams remains batting coach.

Domingo was head coach of South Africa for five years from 2012 and in March became head coach of Lahore Qalandars for the 2025 Pakistan Super League.

He also coached Bangladesh from 2019 before resigning in 2022.

Domingo previously worked with Birrell during his time leading South Africa, with the former Hawks coach his assistant at the time.

“I almost feel like I’ve been coaching Hampshire for five years,” Domingo told BBC Radio Solent.

“One of my best friends [is] Adi Birrell and we’ve got a long history working together.

“So I feel like I’ve been very invested in the team for the last couple of seasons because Adi and I chatted every day about the team’s progress and what’s happening and how things are going.”

Domingo started coaching at a young age, picking up his first qualification when he was just 22.

He oversaw a landmark 4-1 T20 international series win for Bangladesh against Australia, their first ever across all formats.

“I think Hampshire is one of the big County Championship teams at the moment,” Domingo added.

“So it’s a massive privilege and a massive honour to be involved with a club of that stature.

“It was a no brainer for me, It’s an amazing opportunity and I feel like the club’s on an upward curve, they’ve done really well, particularly in white-ball cricket over last couple of seasons, I’m really looking forward to it.”
