Rhossili cliff horses removed after more than 100 years in grazing rights row

The trust said it would engage with Beynon to “further understand” the number of horses that could remain as part of the commoner’s rights to graze on the land.

In a video, Morgan showed the horses being herded away, saying it had been due to “constant pressure”.

Fellow farmer Beynon thanked people, including the wider farming community in Rhossili, but accused the trust of making “our lives hell the last 18 months”.

“It has been very hard,” he said, adding that the cliffs – a popular tourist site on the south-west of the Gower peninsula – now felt “empty”.

A spokesperson for National Trust Cymru acknowledged how much the horses mean to people visiting Rhossili but said “at no stage” had it asked for them to be removed.

“We had been reviewing the number of horses on the common, as they appeared to exceed the agreed limit we believe to be set out in those rights.”

It was awaiting confirmation of the grazing rights before deciding how many horses would be allowed to remain on the common.

“However, if the owner has now chosen to remove all the horses, that decision is entirely his.”
