Gritter forced off road by ‘inconsiderate driver’ in Wigmore

A crew out gritting in Herefordshire were forced off the road by someone driving irresponsibly, a council said.

The crew were treating a route near Wigmore on Thursday evening when the lorry had to take “evasive action” to avoid a vehicle approaching from the opposite direction.

It confirmed the crew were unharmed, and the vehicle was retrieved so that it could continue working through the night to help keep the network open.

The gritters had been out after an amber warning was given for heavy snow during Strom Goretti. A yellow warning for ice has been issued due to the risk of the thawing snow refreezing overnight into Saturday.

“If you are on the roads tonight please drive carefully and with consideration for others,” Ed Bradford, Head of Highways and Traffic said.

“The roads last night it was difficult to drive on parts of the road at times, and that’s exactly why we’re out there.

“It really is a case of allow the gritters that space to get in and do their job in a safe manner,” he added.
