British triathlete Georgia Taylor-Brown surged to an impressive first win on the T100 tour in Spain.

Victory in Pamplona means Taylor-Brown, Britain’s most decorated female Olympic triathlete, is now up to second in the standings in the T100 Race To Qatar, behind Switzerland’s Imogen Simmonds.

The former world champion was fifth after the 2km swim, then moved up to third after the 80km bike stage before taking control during the 18km run to beat Swiss Olympic silver medallist Julie Derron into second place, with Taylor Spivey of the USA in third.

“I was trying to just be quite smart with my racing on the bike because it was hot,” Taylor-Brown, 32, said.

“And then the run, I felt really good for the first and the second lap. But I’m glad I went for it and got a gap because I really wanted to walk the end of it.

“I’ve been feeling good in training and just strong and happy and in a really good place. I’m really enjoying my new coach and my new group. I didn’t expect to win or anything, but I just feel strong and confident.”

Taylor-Brown’s fellow Britons Holly Lawrence and Lizzie Rayner came fourth and sixth, respectively. Their compatriot Kate Waugh, the defending women’s T100 champion, missed the event because of a calf injury.

The next women’s T100 event takes place in Vancouver in August with the T100 World Championship final in Qatar in December.
